Pergolide Mesylate, better known as Permax, is a drug that is used to treat the signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. However, in December 2002 the Mayo Clinic released a report claiming that patients that take Permax have the possibility of developing heart valve disease. Permax shares many characteristics of the diet drug fen-phen which has also been accused of leading to heart valve disease. The Mayo Clinic’s study was based on three cases in which elderly women took Permax everyday for 3 to 7 years. The women were diagnosed with heart valve disease which prevents the hearts valves from properly closing during the hearts pumping motions. Since its introduction in 1989 it is estimated that over 500,000 people have taken the drug.
